World of Illusions, Los Angeles, CA |
We originally planned to see the World of Illusions Museum in Los Angeles for my daughter's 10th birthday in 2020, but the pandemic hit. We were finally able to go on April 10, 2021.
There are four museums inside the World of Illusions: 3D Illusions, Giant's House, Upside Down House, and Smash It! Smash It! is where you get to throw plates and smash them. For safety reasons, it is for ages 12+ years only; and my daughter is 11, so we skipped Smash It!
The day we went was a Saturday. We tried to arrive close to opening hour to avoid crowds, but no luck. Despite what the website indicates, capacity was definitely not limited. Within the first hour of opening, the museum was crowded. There were no temperature checks at the door. Social distancing was not possible. Everyone wore masks, but that was all.
The exhibits are actually very close together. To get a shot of one exhibit almost requires you to step into another, creating wait times and back logs for the most popular ones. We got around the crowds by simply hitting the empty exhibits first, then going back to the popular ones once they were open. We ended up doing the exhibits out of order, but at least we got some great shots in. It's helpful that there are markers on the floor telling you where to stand to get the best shot for each exhibit.
Parking in the Hollywood / Highland area of Los Angeles is limited, so we reserved a parking spot ahead of time through parkme.com for $20. Tickets for each museum are $30 for adults, $20 for kids, except for Smash It! which is $20 for adults only. There are also 2-museum packages, ranging from $40-$60 and 3-museum packages ranging from $60-$90. VIP packages for 2 people and 2-3 experiences, with your own professional photographer, are also available from $200-$400. Check out https://laillusions.com/, the Fever app or Groupon for discounts.
